Hailey Webinger and Montana Patrick are hoping a few pennies will add up.

 
The Grade 7 students from Bernie Wolfe Community School in Transcona decided to organize a fundraiser called Pennies 4 PanCan, to raise money for pancreatic cancer research.  Read the full story here.

Hey everyone,  Lisa here!

At the writing of this post, it is 213 days, 15 hours and 10 minutes until the Manitoba Marathon.  D-day.  The day we have been striving towards.  Brynlee and myself have a couple event ideas up our sleeves to raise much needed $ to shatter our target, stay tuned for those coming events!

My Marathon training is in full swing, running 3x’s a week, and will be incorporating this great exercise routine posted by our friend Jordan Cieciwa of Professional Edge Fitness.

Since healthy eating and exercise habits are integral to preventing close to 50% of all cancer, I’ve decided to kick my training up a notch, and really buckle down on my nutritional intake, and encourage you to do the same!

Make one simple healthy change a week, every week and see what happens to you!  Whether it’s upping your water intake, to parking further away from the doors at the mall, make a simple change to help improve your health.

7 days ago, I committed to a healthy way of eating, and quickly shed 5.4 lbs.

A lean, mean, cancer fighting machine.

It seems that with the passing of Steve Jobs it is even more relevant to talk about pancreatic cancer. It’s one thing to talk about it, it’s another thing to do something about it. Even more than doing “something”, I am moved when people work to a goal. Enter Lisa Webinger, and the Forget Me Not Pancreatic Cancer Network. It is now their mission to raise awareness, funds, and support for pancreatic cancer. Why is a personal trainer like me getting involved? Because we are on a mission!

Here are the facts:

Pancreatic cancer is responsible for 5% of all cancer deaths, yet receives less than 1% of all donations and funding.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada.

Every year, approximately 4000 Canadians are diagnosed, and about 3,900 die from pancreatic cancer.

So what are we doing? We are running to help make pancreatic cancer HISTORY. This is where the personal trainer comes into effect. We are going to make sure there are plenty of exercise tips and advice while Lisa attempts to break a Guinness record follow it all here http://www.pancanmb.com

So let’s talk about running. We have covered the pancreatic cancer, now let’s make sure if you want to help or show your support, you do it healthfully.

If you are going to start in on a distance running program, make sure you cover the muscles you don’t use while running. You need to make sure you move laterally in your workouts (side to side jumps), and also work on hamstring strength, core stability, and the muscles in the back related to posture.

Running is simple. It’s one foot in front of the other. Distance running, and staying healthy while doing it, is a totally different animal all together. You need to cross-train, balance the body, and rest when your body needs it.

As with everything else in this world, consult a professional when you are starting your programs. There are tons of running programs out there that can guide you into safe, progression to get your body ready for a marathon, or half marathon. From there, use the run as a chance to do good! Follow Lisa Webinger’s lead, raise money for a great cause. When you run marathons and half marathons you join 1% of the world’s population. That instantly makes you someone that your friends will be proud of and want to support. As the old saying goes, strike while the iron’s hot. They will respect your drive to run a marathon — get the double whammy when you tell them you are also raising money for a good cause!

If you decide to run, do it safely. You have to cross-train properly to save your body and stay healthy while running. It’s also the best chance in your life to do good for you, and a worthwhile cause.

-The FMN Pancreatic Cancer Network- is about to “Make Pancreatic Cancer History”

Dash out Cancer- Help us rustle up donations as we hustle to the finish line!

Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Marathon – On June 17^th, 2012 one of our team members will be running the Manitoba Half Marathon in a Guinness Book of World Record attempt! From now until June 17^th, 2012 we will be actively fundraising on behalf of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation to break the existing record of “Most money raised for charity whilst running a half marathon”.

We are excited at the prospect of propelling Pancreatic Cancer awareness to the forefront.  Pancreatic Cancer is the 4^th leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada and one of the least funded forms.  Pancreatic Cancer accounts for nearly 5% of all cancer deaths, yet receives less than 1% of all funding.

Our first fundraising campaign is the launch of Pennies For PanCan, in conjunction with Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.  We are encouraging everyone to challenge their friends, coworkers, neighbours and families to collect as much coin as possible between now and November 30^th.  The Cambrian Credit Union will be accepting all rolled coin on our behalf at all 11 branches throughout the month of November.
